Growing up on a farm creates a very special type of woman, and after years of rising with the sun and working my ass off, I’d say I turned out pretty damn well. I’m the type of girl that you can count on, a rough and tumble lady who knows how to milk a cow just as well as I can put on makeup. I never leave the house without my cowboy boots, but when I throw on a pretty dress it will turn every head on the street.

I suppose the one thing I could still use a lesson in is humility, but at a tender twenty-one years old, I’ve still got plenty of time to learn that.

In fact, there’s a lot of learning in my future, as college in the big city rears its ugly head before me. If I could, I would stay here on the farm forever with family, but it know that it’s important to get an education if I want to make it out there in the real world.

Now the days are beginning to count down, edging closer and closer to the inevitable moment where I drive into Chicago and hop a flight to New York. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous as hell.

“This your final shift?” My friend Becky asks as she wipes down the bar of our local diner.

I nod.

“Ah, sweetie.” Becky comes over and gives me a hug. “I’m gonna miss you.”

“I’m gonna miss you, too.” I tell her. “It’s been great working here, I’m just kinda trying to pretend that it’s not my last day and everything is going to be fine.”

“Well, everything is going to be fine, Joanne.” Becky tells me. “You’re going to have so much fun out there in the big city.”

I smile. “I hope so.”

“You’ll probably find a bar tending job right away.” Becky continues. “And it’s going to be much more exciting than working in this dump!”

I glance around the tavern at rows upon rows of empty chairs, a lone drinker off in the corner with her head in her hands, and sigh.

“This is plenty excitement for me.” I tell Becky.

Becky laughs, not even buying it for a second. “Don’t even pretend.”

“Okay, fine.” I say, rolling my eyes. “I can’t wait to get out of here.”

Becky glances up at the clock. “Well, it looks like you’re just about ready. “

She’s right. The end of an era has arrived.

“Give me a hug, Joanne.” Becky says, throwing her arms around me.

We hold each other for a while and then finally pull back, accepting the fact that I’ve finally made it out from the clutches of this beautiful, yet mildly suffocating small town.

“Can you just do me one favor?” Becky asks. “Don’t stop wearing those cowboy boots of yours, okay?”

I laugh. “Of course, not. I’ll always be a country girl at heart.”

Becky winks. “Those city boys will love that.”

Just then, the door of the bar opens with a jingle and a familiar, beautiful face steps inside; my best friend Erin.
